More 24 Hours of Dexter!

For those interested, John Kaster posted links for all the recordings at http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,33368,00.html.

For C++Builder info check out the following...

  • The Kick off with David I - Michael Swindell, Jason Vokes, Malcolm Groves
  • Scott Arnold Borland's CEO who higlights C++Builder
  • Troy Kitch (and gang) who talk about all the great new things you'll find in C++Builder
  • Allen Bauer who talks about the new IDE available to Delphi, C++ and C# developers
  • Eli Boling who talks about the C++ compilier
  • Hadi Hariri who talks about Intraweb C++ support
  • Alisdair Meridith who talks about ANSI C++ happenings (potential future capabilities to be integrated?)
  • some guy with the same name as mine who talks about the return of C++Builder ;-)
Those are just a few C++ items to listen to. Keep in mind that there are other great recordings to listen to as well. One that intrigued me the most was Brian Long's. Check it out when you get a chance.

My 24 Hours of Dexter!

I had great fun participating in the 24 Hours of Dexter internet radio event! If you missed it, I had about a 20+ minute window to share my thoughts on Dexter -- specifically C++Builder 2006 - from the hours of 7:15-7:35 Eastern. Here's the audio replay (MP3 download - 9mb) for those that want to replay it or having trouble sleeping.

During my time I also shared briefly some of the input received from the C++Builder users, which we used in the development of the Open Community Letter we sent out a year ago! Essentially I talked about the desire we as a community have for the continuation of C++Builder (including support for Win32 and the VCL). And that we're very happy about the response we're now seeing with the announcement of DeXTER! I also highlighted my upcoming "Patterns" session at DevCon, which will include a mix of C++, C# and Delphi code in our reflection of some pattern examples! (Plan to use DeXTER for the presentation)

For those curious, I had originally captured the comments I wanted to share for the 24 Hour event in Word as a bullet list. I had 8 pages of thoughts printed out in front of me when John Kaster "Skyped" me into the show. But, as I typically do for my presentations, I limited the use of my notes and just ran improv. I guess I just felt it was better to try to engage with David, John, Michael Swindell (who was present) and Anders and respond to their questions and comments rather than read from my bullet list as a "paper tele-prompt". I certainly I had a lot more on the list than I shared, but I hope that at least the things I did say it came across as genuine, real, somewhat entertaining, and -- most importantly -- that we are certainly excited about the return of C++Builder!

Symbiotic Nature of Delphi and C++ (and the team behind it!)

All I can say is, wow!

I just got done reading Allen Bauer's blog titled "Passionate Producers - Passionate Consumers" and must say I'm impressed. I'm impressed with the passion that I sense from not only Allen but the entire Delphi/C++ team, but I'm also impressed with Allen's writing skills. (Well done Allen).

If you have a few minutes, be sure to read his blog entry it in its entirety. However, if you are limited in time, allow me to highlight a few things he said.

I start with Delphi comments, because, as you'll see, it directly relates to the C++Builder... and it's users.

"Delphi is far more than simply an IDE. In fact, for Delphi the IDE is merely a convenient place for all the technologies that surround Delphi to converge."

"Take away any one of these three things; the language, framework, development environment, and Delphi ceases being Delphi.”

"...C++Builder would have not existed without Delphi. The Delphi compiler actually directly generates all the necessary supporting files and libraries required for a C++Builder application. The relationship between Delphi and C++Builder is very symbiotic. "

"Like the Delphi market, the C++Builder market is no less loyal and near cult-like. Remember the open letter from the C++Builder community to Borland? What customer base, even a C++ customer base, would take the time to create a letter and get signatures from many rather large installations?”

"Most of the members of the Delphi/C++Builder team love working on the product not only because they believe in the product, but also because they know and understand the Delphi and C++Builder market and its customers.”

I think these comments from Allen, provide a sense of Borland's passion and dedication to the products they produce... including C++Builder.

Next Generation C++Builder Unveiled!

Happy Columbus Day everyone!

I just received word that C++Builder 2006 has been officially announced on the Borland website!! And, if you peruse the site enough, you'll discover that C++Builder, Delphi, and C# will all be made all avaiblle in one IDE identified as Borland Developer Studio. In fact, it's a 3 for 1 deal. If you want C++Builder, you'll also get get Delphi and C#. If you want Delphi you get C++Builder and C#. Here's what the FAQ says...

"To make it easier for existing customers to find, we are selling the studio under the traditional Delphi®, C++Builder®, and C#Builder® brands for this release – no matter which of these you buy, you’ll get the same complete studio, the same capabilities, at the same price."

Also, there's a must download demo to be watched from bdn that provides an 11 minute overview of this next generation C++Builder personality within the Borland Developer Studio environment. There are lots of great new features.

No signs yet at the Borland store though of its availability. We can only hope it’s soon.
